Denis Diderot fu un noto scrittore e filosofo illuminista, tra i promotori della celebre Encyclopédie assieme a D'Alembert ed altri intellettuali francesi. L'università che ne prende il nome nasce con la riforma del 1970, a seguito della quale le università parigine hanno assunto la configurazione attuale.
Inizialmente ubicata nel Campus de Jussieu, oggi l'università Denis Diderot è presente in un nuovo campus nel XIII arrondissement, oltre ad avere altre sedi in città.
L'offerta formativa include corsi di medicina, matematica, scienze della terra, fisica e lettere. 26.000 gli studenti iscritti al 2009. Molto ricca l'offerta di servizi ed attività extra, anche in ambito sportivo.
